The history, re-designing and restoration of "Da Vinci", a love/hate relationship over nearly 2 and half years.
"Da vinci" was built in 1941 for the British admiralty, her true designation is a harbor launch, Pinnace no.41369. We think that she was based somewhere on the south coast of Britain, probably in Portsmouth during her time with the Admiralty, during WWII. She would have been used to ferry cargo, sailors, officers to and thro, to the ships moored out in the deeper water of the port.
(A good friend of ours, Mr. Alan R. Himself being an ex-officer in the merchant navy, aboard passenger liners is trying to find out more of her history, and we thank him very much for his time and efforts).
We know from her Records that she was sold on to the private sector in 1950. When she came out of the Admiralty service, she was called Donora. From 1950-1967, we are not too sure about her history. She was brought and sold a number of times in the late 1960`s, always staying around the London area. From the log book, 1 person owned her from 1969-1980 and during this time she had a refit. She was then refitted again, sometime in the 1980`s, when she was owned by a professional pianist. She had a piano in the back cabin where she rehearsed for her concerts. Donora was moored for along time at Ash Island, near Hampton Court, Surrey. During 1990`s, she was sold again, and Finally being sold to Rick Mietkowski in 2003, who used her as his London base.
Rick was in visual effects in the movie industry, and had a fine list of good movies to his credit. Some of which being, James bond, Hitchhikers guide, Event Horizon, Shakespeare in love, Blackhawk down, Entrapment, Fifth Element, lost in space, Blackadder to name a few. He sadly passed away suddenly in June 2006, just after finishing The Da vinci Code. Through family connections we inherited the boat, Donora was then brought out to France and her name changed to Da vinci in honor of Rick and his life`s work in the movies.
AND NOW THE WORK BEGINS

Anne-Marie, with "Da Vinci" the boats new name / Me and "Da vinci" go into the water
Back in the water after 7 months on dry land, she leaked for a week and then stopped. I stayed with her all day for the first 2 days from dawn to dusk.We had planned to go Venice for a short break for week, so I left her in the hands of friend at the boatyard. I did kind of worry for a few days at first, but no news is good news. She did behave whilst we were away !!!
Stage 2, redesigning the interior
The aft cabin, before starting work, to be the new galley.
The old wheelhouse, before starting work.
The dividing wall removed, between the aft cabin and wheelhouse. Getting ready for the start of work, on the new open galley area.
The old and dated, salon.
The old galley, soon to the new shower and the old shower and toilet.
The old bedroom, with bunk beds.
With the bulkheads removed Between the salon, toilet, galley and bedroom, the space was incredible. We could then visualize what we wanted from the space, and the new design to come.
Stage 3, refitting
Work starts on the bedroom, repainting the bilge areas, cutting in the new floor, building the base of the double bed.
With the base of the bed in and bulkheads replaced, the bedroom became a wood storing area. The new toilet and wash room now receive the electricity cables and water pipes along with the new electric toilet, instead of the old Porta pottie .
The new galley is well underway, with the new 4 ring gas hob, gas oven, sink, fridge and lighting installed. This took a long time as all the cupboards and work tops had to hand made due to the contours of the boat. Once everything was in place the worktops were tiled and everything was connected up.
The boat looking a bit like Japanese junk boat, it gets very hot here, most times in the summer it is in high 30º`s to mid 40º`s and thats in the shade. It is unbearable to work in the direct sun. It took me just over a month to strip, repair and re-deck "Da vinci".
In January 2009, the S.W of France had a really bad storm, it brought down a number of trees in the port. Some of the boats were not so lucky, but "Da Vinci" although coming close to being hit by a tree, just escaped. We think she had a Guardian angel that day, as did these two other boats in the port.
Finally finished
"Da Vinci" is finally finish after a 2 ½ year, love and hate relationship. I hated having to go to work on her, but when I got there, I loved being on her. I would sometimes spend, anything up to 10 hours a day or more. At first I think she was fated, because anything I tried to do, was always problematical. Products got lost in Paris, for a month at the start, paint delivery was never on time, the weather played a big part too. It seamed that, when I was waiting for paint orders to arrive, it would be warm and sunny, but when it arrived it would suddenly rain for a week. Only when nearly finishing her, did everything seamed to settle down, things started to go right for a change. Now she is finished, she is behaving herself.
Basking in all the love and attention she received !
Boat project 2
As I am a glutton for punishment, this is our other boat project, "Cohiba". Originally our first project, but "Da Vinci" took precedence as she is wooden. "Cohiba" is a 1974 Trojan F-32, sports sea fishing boat, built in the U.S.A. She has 2 x 5.7lt, V8`s, 250hp petrol engines, we are thinking about changing theses to diesel engines, most probably Volvo Penta`s. The interior will also be changed to make it more like a modern sports fisher.
Keep an check to see the progress next year 2010,
I am also available for work on any one else`s boat if required
This is me, Paul.
